DESCRIPTION

The efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains in controversy based on available clinical experience and research. The evidence of efficacy, safety profile, dosing and treatment durability of oxygen therapies will be reviewed. Mechanisms and theoretical benefits of HBO2/ normobaric therapy in TBI (severe and mild) will also be examined. The symposium will conclude with a discussion regarding future directions for research.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Discuss the mechanism of hyperbaric/ normobaric oxygen therapy in acute stage of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and oxygen toxicity and safety concerns
2. Examine the theoretical benefit of hyperbaric oxygen for individuals with persistent symptoms after concussion
3. Understand the scientific literature and evidence on the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen for individuals with severe TBI or symptoms associated with the chronic effects of concussion
4. Discuss the controversies surrounding the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for individuals with persistent symptoms after combat-exposure, including those with co-occurring concussion exposure and PTSD
5. Discuss future directions for research in the use of hyperbaric oxygen for treatment of TBI

 

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Sarah B. Rockswold, MD, is board-certified in the medical specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation. She has specialized in the rehabilitation of patients with traumatic brain injury for the past 13 years. She is the Medical Director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Center of Excellence at Hennepin County Medical Center. She is an assistant professor in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department at the University of Minnesota. She has been involved in research on the use of hyperbaric oxygen in traumatic brain injury for the past 20 years including three NIH sponsored trials and 7 peer reviewed journal articles.

 

Dr. David Cifu is the chairman and the Herman J. Flax Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, chief of PM&R Services at the VCU Health System, the executive director of the VCU Center for Rehabilitation Services and Engineering (CERSE) and prior national director of PM&R Program Office within the Veterans Health Administration. Cifu is also a member of the senior executive staff for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He has been funded on more than 30 research grants and is the principal or co-principal investigator on eight current grants. He has delivered more than 425 regional, national and international lectures, published more than 165 articles and 65 abstracts and co-authored 20 books and book chapters. He has recently co-authored the patient and family focused self-help book, “Overcoming Post-Deployment Syndrome: A Six-Step Mission to Health.”

 

Min Jeong P. Graf, MD, obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree at Jeju National University School of Medicine in South Korea in 2007. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York in 2013. Following her residency, She completed a fellowship in Brain Injury Medicine at the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison, New Jersey. She is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Brain Injury Medicine. She is the Medical Director of the Traumatic Brain Injury Outpatient Program at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota.

 

Nathan Zasler, MD, is CEO & Medical Director for Concussion Care Centre of Virginia, Ltd., as well as CEO & Medical Director for Tree of Life Services, Inc. and Vice-Chairperson of the International Brain Injury Association (IBIA). Dr. Zasler is board certified in PM&R, fellowship trained in brain injury and subspecialty certified in brain injury medicine. He is an affiliate professor in the VCU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Richmond, VA, and an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. He also currently serves as Vice-Chairperson of IBIA. Dr. Zasler has published and lectured extensively on TBI related neuromedical issues and edited 6 textbooks including “Brain Injury Medicine: Principals and Practice”. He is co-chief editor of “Brain Injury” and “NeuroRehabilitation.” He serves on numerous journal editorial boards. Dr. Zasler is active in local, national and international organizations dealing with acquired brain injury and neurodisability, serving in numerous consultant and board member roles. Dr. Zasler is an advocate, educator, clinical researcher, inventor, entrepreneur and busy practicing clinician who is involved with community based neurorehabilitation, chronic pain management, and international health care consultation, both clinical and medicolegal.
