The Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) provides the opportunity to learn important information about brain injury, to demonstrate learning in a written examination, and to earn a nationally recognized credential.

In order to maintain their CBIS certification, practitioners must complete 10 hours of continuing education that is specific to brain injury each year.

Brain injury-serving organizations value hiring and training CBIS certified staff, because it allows them to work with and promote their clinicians who understand the unique needs of persons recovering from brain injury and staying abreast of current resources in the field.

WHAT IS IT?

This is the official ACBIS Course for preparation for the CBIS Exam, which will be offered at the end of Day 2 of the training for those who have been predetermined as eligible to sit for the exam. Join more than 6,000 Certified Brain Injury Specialists worldwide and enjoy the support of the Academy offering brain injury education CEUs.

ACBIS offers a voluntary national certification program for both direct care staff and professionals working in brain injury services. The Certification requires demonstration of learning, through its examination, in the following domains:

  • TBI and diagnostic imaging
  • Medical, physical, cognitive, neurobehavioral, and psychosocial consequences of injury
  • TBI in pediatrics and adolescents, as well as aging with a brain injury
  • Concussions and mTBI, as well as disorders of consciousness
  • Rehabilitation philosophy, outcome measurement, and care management
  • Effect of injuries on families
  • Cultural, gender, and sexuality issues
  • Military populations
  • Neuropsychology
  • Participation and return to work

This official ACBIS instructional course is designed to prepare them to take the certification examination. To obtain CBIS (certification), candidates must complete the required work experience and training and pass an examination. Please see “CBIS Requirements” below for important information about the application process.


WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The ACBIS training and certification exam are intended for paraprofessionals and professionals at all levels who want a strong foundation in the best practices in brain injury rehabilitation.

The CBIS Training Course is offered for those who are preparing for the CBIS exam which will be given at the end of the course 24 October. However, the course is also appropriate for paraprofessionals and professionals at all levels who simply want a strong foundation in the best practices in brain injury rehabilitation and do not wish to sit for the certification exam.

The Brain Injury Association of America offers a voluntary national certification program for both direct-care level staff and experienced professionals working in brain injury services through the Academy for Certification of Brain Injury Specialists.


CBIS REQUIREMENTS

To obtain CBIS, candidates must complete the required work experience and training and pass an examination. Participants who wish to sit for the proctored certification exam immediately following the training, must apply for testing no later than 17 October
