Rehabilitation of Functional Neurological Disorders >>

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a common but undertreated and widely misunderstood disabling illness. However, recent research has suggested the combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and symptom-oriented physical rehabilitation may be efficacious. This Special Symposium will begin by reviewing the historical background and neuroscientific evidence of disease mechanisms of FND. Next, we will describe the structure of an FND clinic. This will detail the rehabilitation physician’s role for assessing for possible FND, ruling out false-positive diagnoses, and presenting and explaining the diagnosis. Finally, the role of CBT coupled with physical rehabilitation and recent clinical study outcomes will be reviewed.

IC 9: Integrated Mind-Body Rehabilitation Practice >>

Moving beyond lip-service into effective delivery of whole-person care can be a challenge. In this workshop, we will explore the application of practical tools for evidence-based mind-body integration in rehabilitation. The chronic pain and opioid epidemics underscore a need for improved capacity to engage an integrative model of care, however this makes good sense as a standard for all care. The historical splitting of mind, body, and environment (both physical and social) continues to negatively impact the delivery of care. The inter-related fields of psychoneuroimmunology and mind-body medicine demonstrate the role of toxic stress on processes of autonomic dysregulation, central sensitization, and other biological underpinnings of pain and many other chronic health challenges. Person-centered mind-body care can help! Join us – biopsychosocial practice starts now!

IC 25: Introduction to the Benefits of Virtual Reality for Neurological Rehabilitation >>

The instructional course will provide an insight and overview into virtual reality applications in healthcare and a deeper understanding of its uses for neurological rehabilitation in cognitive and physical therapy. Topics of the course will include: leveraging neuroplasticity of the brain with immersive 3D environments with precise control over the stimulus and the cognitive load that the user experiences, how programming functional goals into VR therapy exercises increases patient engagement, progress reports on patient progress with quantitative data to aid in recovery, psychological effects of virtual reality, and the overall efficiency of utilizing VR during therapy.
