John Morris, PhD, FACRM
Clinical Research Scientist, Shepherd Center
John Morris, PhD, FACRM is a Clinical Research Scientist and Director of Assistive Technology Research at Shepherd Center. His background and current research focuses on user needs and usability for product and service design, and development and testing of assistive and rehabilitation technology for people with all types of disability. He leads several R&D projects for mobile software applications and clinical interventions based on mainstream consumer technology platforms, and directs several research projects focusing on user needs and usability for product and service design, development and testing for the LiveWell Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Community Living, Health and Function (LiveWell RERC). In addition, he has served as operations director for the Wireless RERC and currently serve as operations director for the LiveWell RERC. These projects have resulted in peer-reviewed publications, regulatory filings, conference presentations, and training and education curricula. Additionally, John serves as local PI for a Department of Defense project on clinical evaluation of caregiving skills and for a NIDILRR-funded project to develop online training materials for paid caregivers of people with spinal cord injury. Prior to joining Shepherd Center, John worked for Oracle Corporation as a senior product development manager, designing and validating new and updated products and services. John also served as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut, and has served in several leadership roles for the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM), including serving currently as co-chair of the Technology Networking Group.

Paolo Bonato, PhD
Associate Faculty, Harvard Medical School
Paolo serves as Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston MA. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School, and an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, Harvard Medical School. He has held Adjunct Faculty positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Ireland Galway, and the University of Melbourne. At the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, he brings his experience in rehabilitation technology with special emphasis on wearable technology and robotics.
Dr. Bonato serves as Member of the Advisory Board of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics and as Associate Editor of the IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine. He served as Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation. Dr. Bonato served as an Elected Member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) AdCom (2007-2010) and currently serves as IEEE EMBS Vice-President for Publications (2013-present). He served as President of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (2008-2010). He also served as Chair of the 33rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (2011) and as Chair of the IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on Wearable Biomedical Sensors and Systems in 2008, a committee of which he was a founding member in 2006 and on which he served until 2012. He received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy in 1989 and the Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering from Universita di Roma “La Sapienza” in 1995.
Richard Riggs, MD
Vice President and CMIO, Cedars-Sinai
Dr. Richard V. Riggs is Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer for the Cedars-Sinai, Co-Director of the Division of Informatics, Chairman and Medical Director Department of Physical Medicine &Rehabilitation, Cedars-Sinai, Chief Medical Strategy Officer and Chief of Staff of California Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Riggs serves on the CSMC Board of Directors as well as on the Executive Committee of the Board. Dr. Riggs is a Professor at CSMC and UCLA. Dr. Riggs is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Clinical Informatics Subspecialty certification. He has published and lectured nationally and internationally on clinical and administrative rehabilitation research and topics, as well delivered lectures on physician leadership skills and health informatics. Current grant funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), United States Department of Commerce.
Matthew Bartels, MD, MPH
Professor and Chairman, Albert Einstein College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center
Matthew N. Bartels is the Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a regional medical provider in the Bronx and Lower Hudson Valley in New York State. He received his MD and MPH degrees from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons with Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Programs at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He established the Human Performance Laboratory at Columbia University and directed Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation there until September 2013.
Dr. Bartels has published multiple scientific and review papers and is an invited speaker both in the United States and internationally. His particular areas of interest include cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, transplantation, heart failure, advanced lung disease, autonomic physiology, athletic performance enhancement, biomechanical interventions for musculoskeletal pain, exercise and cognition, new technologies to enhance delivery of rehabilitative care, international medicine, and development of new models of post acute care delivery.
Brian R. Theodore, PhD
Research Scientist II, Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center, Kaiser Permanente
Brian R. Theodore, PhD, is trained in Experimental Psychology with a focus on Health Psychology and Quantitative Methods. Over the past 7 years, he has conducted clinical research on patient-reported outcomes assessment, psychometric validation of outcome measures, statistical models identifying risk factors for barriers to recovery, health economic evaluation, and medico-legal issues relevant to the rehabilitation of patients suffering from chronic pain and disability. He has routinely served as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on grants designed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for pain and functional improvement across the healthcare continuum, using structured interdisciplinary rehabilitation, telehealth, web-based training modules, longitudinal patient-reported outcomes assessment and registries, and workflow integration of these solutions into the clinical setting. Dr. Theodore is currently a Research Scientist II at the Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center overseeing the development of a comprehensive research program in rehabilitation of patients with acquired brain injuries. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Knowledge Translation Taskforce in ACRM’s Complementary and Integrative Rehabilitation Medicine Networking Group’s Executive Committee.

Tracey Wallace, CCC-SLP
Speech-Language Pathologist/ Clinical Research Scientist, Shepherd Center
Tracey Wallace, MS, CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist at Shepherd Center, in Atlanta, Georgia where she specializes in brain injury rehabilitation. She also performs clinical research, provides mentorship to staff and participates in community outreach and advocacy. Tracey has over 15 years of experience using assistive technology for cognition to help people with cognitive-communication impairments function more independently and participate in desired activities at home, work, school and in their community. She has published and lectured nationally on outcome measurement, functional interventions and the use of technology in rehabilitation for brain injury. Tracey is currently a co-investigator on several active grant funded research projects focused on development and testing of emerging technologies for cognitive rehabilitation.
