A postdoctoral associate position is available in the Spinal Cord Injury Research Department at the McGuire Research Institute, Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, in Richmond, Virginia. The successful candidate will be involved in research projects aimed at investigating the effects of different interventions on the neuromuscular and skeletal system in individuals with spinal cord injury.

The laboratory is equipped with a dynamometer (Biodex) for torque assessments with and without neuromuscular electrical stimulation; Functional Electrical Stimulation Cycling (FES Bike), Electrical Stimulation Units (E-Stim Unit), and DXA for musculoskeletal assessments for body composition assessment. Future research projects will be also focused on postural control in spinal cord injured individuals with and without spinal cord epidural stimulation. Other populations (i.e. elderly individuals) might be also the subjects of future research projects. Several of our research projects currently focused on exoskeleton training, EMG analysis, measuring metabolic costs of walking in persons with SCI.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have a PhD with basic training in human physiology or psychology; desired qualifications include experience in research related to neurophysiology, exercise physiology, kinesiology and/or biomechanics. A background in spinal cord injury research is beneficial. Applicants are expected to have a strong interest in using multidisciplinary research approaches and be highly motivated to work independently and as part of a team.
