“Moving From Clinician Centered Towards Patient Engaged Rehab Research: European and USA Comparisons”

Session Description: The objective of this plenary session is to present ongoing work on patient/provider collaboration in clinical care and research involving rehabilitative populations, including stroke, Parkinson, and Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions. Dr. Erwin E. H. van Wegen will present current literature on patient engagement in research, compare and contrast EU and USA policies on patient engagement in rehabilitation research, and discuss innovative, transformative patient/provider collaborative data driven models in which people living with disabilities serve as co-researchers in the research process, from developing grant applications, to collecting data, administering health-enhancing physical medicine and rehabilitation interventions, disseminating products and policy change.

Session Description: Dr. Erickson’s paradigm shifting NIH funded research describes mechanisms by which exercise might affect our 2½ half pound universe, brain health, and volume, and how this evidence might provide a better understanding of brain function and brain health.

Session Description: This session will partner the inspirational voice of Sam Schmidt, an individual with spinal cord injury (SCI) related paralysis that used his driving success to “drive” the field of SCI research, technology and participation with the advanced technological SAM car.

Session Description: This presentation will address triage and treatment of risks for cardiometabolic disease after SCI, and present data on novel molecular tools undergoing pre-clinical testing. If translated for human use, these interventions may more effectively manage risks accompanying SCI and other disabilities.
