DIAGNOSIS

DIAGNOSIS-Independent, Outcomes Research

FOCUS

Outcomes research

Secondary Focus Area

Geriatric Rehabilitation

DESCRIPTION

Item response theory (IRT) holds great promise and has become increasingly popular in clinical outcomes assessment because it provides more adaptable and effective methods of assessment tool development, analysis and scoring. This workshop will provide an overview of IRT models and discuss how they can be appropriately applied to clinical outcomes assessment in physical medicine and rehabilitation research and practice. Specifically, the following topics will be discussed with empirical data: 1) fundamentals of IRT; 2) types of commonly-used IRT models; applications of IRT models (e.g., item reduction, differential item functioning and equating); and 4) new directions.

ABSTRACT BODY

Accurate and continuous assessment of functional outcomes plays a vital role in the provision of critical data to identify care-related issues, facilitate patient-clinician communication, guide clinical decision making, and monitor outcomes over time. This demands theoretically sound and clinically practical methods to maximize data quality and minimize respondent burden. It calls for better analytical tools beyond the methods available from traditional measurement theory. BIO SKETCHES

Chih-Hung Chang, PhD

Chih-Hung Chang, PhD, is Director, Clinical Outcomes and Infometrics, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC); Associate Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; Associate Professor, Buehler Center on Aging, Health & Society – Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; Adjunct Professor, Graduate Institute of Biostatistics, China Medical University; and Faculty Affiliate, Center for Health Statistics, University of Chicago. Dr. Chang graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from National Chengchi University in Taiwan, and a doctorate of philosophy in research methodology and quantitative psychology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Chang’s research focuses on the integration of advanced methodologies (psychometrics) and evolving technologies (informatics) to facilitate accurate and timely outcomes measurement and cost-effective symptom and disease management across populations, medical conditions, and care settings. He is an internationally recognized psychometrician with pioneering expertise in applying item response theory to health-related quality of life and patient-reported outcomes measurements. He also has unparalleled expertise in item banking and computerized adaptive testing. Dr. Chang has co-authored over peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
