Task Force Spotlight: The ACRM Girls and Women Task Force

The ACRM Girls and Women Task Force is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge, developing standards of practice, and advocating for equitable care for girls and women with acquired brain injury (ABI). Dr Brooke Holt, PhD, CCC-SLP (UNC Greensboro) is currently leads the task force. It was established in 2010 with advocacy from persons with lived experience and was previously led by Dr. Angela Colantonio and Dr. Yelena Goldin. Despite growing awareness of the unique challenges faced by girls and women, research and clinical guidelines remain limited. The Task Force works to bridge these gaps by promoting knowledge mobilization and fostering collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and other key stakeholders.

Over the past year, the Task Force has grown in membership, expanding its reach and impact. Monthly calls have provided an ongoing forum for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and engagement with guest speakers, fostering a supportive and collaborative community. Through symposia and scholarly contributions, the group has worked to elevate research and clinical discussions surrounding ABI in girls and women. One significant milestone was the submission of an ACRM Instructional/Educational Paper on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and TBI, addressing a critical yet often overlooked issue. Additionally, the Task Force continued its tradition of recognizing excellence in research by awarding the Deborah Lee Price Poster Award.

Looking ahead, the Task Force remains committed to driving progress in research, advocacy, and clinical practice to improve outcomes for girls and women with ABI. Those interested in contributing to this important work are encouraged to get involved.
