Edward Lowman Award 2018
The ACRM Awards Committee is pleased to honor Ross Zafonte, DO, FACRM with the 2018 Edward Lowman Award. Dr. Zafonte is Earle P. and Ida S. Charlton Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School and Vice President of Medical Affairs Education and Research at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network.
Dr. Zafonte has been involved in care and research for those with TBI for the past 19 years. His work has included a decade long dedication to the care of those with sports-related concussion as well as those with concussion from military injuries. In specific, he has been developing clinical exam and neurophysiologic metrics to better evaluate those with concussion. Dr. Zafonte also serves as a concussion consultant to an NFL team and has worked with NHL ice hockey players, collegiate and high school football players.
At present, he is PI of a DOD clinical trial project evaluating novel treatments for those with mild TBI. In addition, he is a co-investigator on a DOD neuroimaging in TBI program with a focus on mild TBI, as well as previously serving as national PI of the COBRIT study (citicoline in the treatment of TBI), in which those with complicated mild injuries are included. Dr. Zafonte has been a part of both military, as well as VA and ANA groups examining concussion.
