In recent years there has been substantial support for heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as a treatment for a variety of disorders and for performance enhancement. Many conditions appear to respond to this form of cardiorespiratory feedback training, including anxiety, depression, respiratory disorders, hypertension, and pain. HRVB also appears to enhance performance ability, from athletics to dance and music performance. Possible mechanisms for the positive effects of HRVB include systematic stimulation, strengthening of the baroreflexes and improved respiratory gas exchange. A review of these possible mechanisms will be done. We will also present evidence that HRVB can improve general resilience.
