COURSE DESCRIPTION

The wheelchair is one of the most enabling technologies a clinician can provide. However, without proper selection and setup, the positive impact on quality of life can be compromised. In this course, you will learn the evidence behind key wheelchair setup modifications and practice making these adjustments on ultra lightweight manual wheelchairs. Because wheelchair setup and wheelchair skills go hand-in-hand, we will follow adjustments with skills practice of wheelies and curbs to understand the impact of adjustments and improve clinician ability to teach these skills to patients and clients. If you are going to practice these skills during the virtual session we recommend you have a spotter available. We will be present virtually to provide remote feedback and answer questions as you’re making adjustments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Identify 3 basic tools needed to complete wheelchair adjustments
  2. Describe the evidence behind wheelchair modifications to optimize user positioning
  3. Describe manual wheelchair optimal rear wheel position in 2 planes
  4. Provide a structured approach to teaching wheelies and curbs
