BIO

Cindy Nowinski, MD, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and Research Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Social Sciences, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Her research focuses on improving health and healthcare quality through the development and application of outcomes and outcome measures. She has extensive experience in developing person-centered self-report and performance measures such as Neuro-QoL (Quality of Life in Neurological Disorders), the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) and the NIH Toolbox for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function (NIH Toolbox). She was Scientific Director of the NIH Toolbox project, which developed instruments to assess cognitive, motor, emotional and sensory health and function for people aged 3-85. Each of these initiatives helped address a well-recognized limitation in many areas of clinical research – the lack of standardized outcome measures. Currently, Dr. Nowinski is co-investigator on several NIH-funded measurement-related projects, including ARMADA: Advancing Reliable Measurement in Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive Aging; MyCog: Rapid detection of cognitive impairment in everyday clinical settings; and the MobileToolbox for Monitoring Cognitive Function. As a member of HealthMeasures, a publicly-available assessment resource, she provides scientific support, consultation and education on use of the NIH Toolbox.
