Course Description

More powerful and more flexible than repeated measures ANOVA, there are many reasons to prefer linear mixed-effect regression (LMER) for both experimental and clinical data. This practicum course will introduce attendees to LMER analysis and is intended for researchers/clinicians who work with longitudinal data.  It is strongly recommended that attendees be familiar with multiple regression prior to the course and/or attend the ACRM pre-conference course, “Introduction to Longitudinal Data Analysis (Part I)”. Prior to the course, we ask attendees to download and install R and R Studio on a laptop that they will bring with them to the conference. R and R Studio are available on PC/Mac/Linux. The course is broken into four modules:

Data Visualization: Using a manufactured dataset, we will explore variables related to outpatient stroke rehabilitation. The first part of the course will focus on organization and “cleaning” data for longitudinal analysis, and then creating effective data visualizations.
Model Building: Using linear-mixed effect regression (LMER), we will review what is meant by fixed-effects and random-effects and how LMER allows us to model changes within an individual over time. We will explore simple-effects and interactions between variables with “two-level” data (i.e., time nested within a participant).
Model Comparison: After building LMER models to test our hypotheses, we will discuss two common model comparison methods and how to make decisions between competing ICG models.
Tips, Tricks, and Asking the Right Questions: Finally,we will present common errors and methods for testing the assumptions of LMER models. Attendees will also leave with a “cheat sheet” of terms and questions they should ask a consulting statistician/biostatistician when analyzing longitudinal data in the future.

At the end of the course, attendees will be able to import data into R, format it, and create data visualizations showing individual growth curves over time. Attendees will leave with a set of R script files for their reference (including a copy of all other course materials). These script files will be useful for future work when attendees are building their own statistical models with their own data! Finally, we hope that the tips, tricks, and questions materials will be very useful for designing studies with IGC hypotheses and when interpreting IGC studies in the literature.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Perform basic tasks in R Studio, including installing and opening necessary packages, and accessing script and data files.
  2. Visualize longitudinal data by plotting individual growth curves and group level trajectories in R.
  3. VPerform model comparison tests using Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and the deviance statistic.
