DESCRIPTION

Mentoring is a critical component for the growth and future of any field, including rehabilitation. The presence of a diverse, interdisciplinary representation of professionals within ACRM and a membership consisting of many of the top individuals across the disciplines provides an ideal environment for quality mentorship across ACRM.

To capitalize on the unique opportunity the diversity of ACRM’s membership presents, the Early Career Networking Group (ECNG) is establishing a mentoring database to match mentors and mentees across the communities.

This workshop has been developed to train effective mentors and provide an in-depth look at the ACRM mentoring program.

Keynote speaker and ACRM President, Dr. Deborah Backus, will kick off the workshop, which will utilize open discussion, small groups and case scenarios to allow attendees the opportunity to build effective mentoring skills, as well as opportunities for self-reflection on their own experiences.

Course content will focus on establishing expectations with your mentee, maintaining effective and timely communication, practicing active listening and promoting professional development within the ECNG’s core topics: grants and scientific writing; career development: applying for jobs, promotion or tenure; work-life balance; mentoring; and conference/meetings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. List and demonstrate the qualities of an effective mentor
  2. Identify individual areas of strength for mentoring
  3. Describe the ACRM mentoring program and mentor expectations
  4. Implement the ACRM mentor/mentee contract
